STUDENT MINISTRIES Director with
Students Welcome to the Student Ministries Home Page! Below you’ll find our various group meeting times and some introductory information about our purpose, vision, and many activities: The Junior High and Senior High are meeting together on Sunday Nights at 5:30.
Jr. High Group Sunday nights 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm at the church Sr. High Group Sunday nights 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm at the church College Group Tuesday nights 7:30 pm Girls Bible Study Group (every other) Wednesday nights 7:00 pm What are the student groups like? The St. John’s Student Ministry includes separate Jr. High, Sr. High and College-aged groups. Everything we do fits into one of our five purposes, represented by the acronym S.H.A.R.E. This stands for SERVING others, HONORING God, ACCEPTING one another, REACHING out and EQUIPPING for growth. What do the student groups do? Our youth groups and college group are always busy with a ton of great meetings, activities and events. Here is just a sampling of some of the many events that go on at St. John’s for our 12-25 year old members: SERVING Others – An important part of our ministry is our participation in a variety of service projects and missions opportunities. Whether it’s cooking a meal for the residents of P.A.T.H. (People Assisting the Homeless), raising money for the hungry through our annual Souper Bowl of Caring project, buying gifts for a needy child through the Angel Tree program, or preparing food packages with the One Voice Project we have a great time serving others! Not long ago, the Sr. High group held a car wash and raised almost $1300 that was donated to the International Justice Mission, a Christian organization that works to free third world children from forced slavery and prostitution. Each year we participate in an extended Mission Trip and have done work in Mexico, rural Tennessee, The Grand Canyon, Chicago and many other places! If you’re looking for a practical way to show God’s love to our community and the world, the St. John’s Student Ministry is a good place to start! HONORING God – Although it’s our desire to honor God in everything we do, we are careful to consciously set aside time for worship, prayer, praise singing and participation in the larger church body. Each Student Ministries group does things a little differently, but prayer and praise are a big part of our program. Whether it’s sharing prayer requests as a group, starting our meeting times with singing, participating in the annual Youth Sunday, or joining in the quarterly “Gathering Praise Night Celebrations” we express our belief that we’re not just the church of tomorrow, but also an important part of the church today! ACCEPTING One Another – Some people call it fellowship, but we just call it having fun hanging out with church friends. We have Super Bowl parties, Oscar parties, go-kart nights, and movie nights. We go bowling, mini-golfing, and out to eat. Did I mention swimming, water skiing, scavenger hunts and beach trips? We love to have a great time with each other! The Jr. and Sr. High groups start every meeting with games. You haven’t really lived until you’ve been introduced to our patented all-original (and sometimes lethal) Caday Dodgeball! Join us if you dare! REACHING Out – We think we’ve got a pretty good thing going in the Student Ministries, but we don’t want to keep it all to ourselves! That’s right, we want everyone to know they’re welcome to join in the fun, sometimes crazy and deeply satisfying life of faith in Jesus. We have several events every year to which we encourage our members to invite new friends. Some people might not want to jump into the whole church thing with both feet right away, so we like to give everyone a chance to just hang out with us and see how weird we are first. Every winter we take an extended weekend snow ski trip to Mammoth. In addition, we’ve been whitewater rafting, paintballing, held all night lock-ins, gone to Magic Mountain, Disneyland, Knott’s Scary Farm Halloween Haunt and taken some killer field trips around Los Angeles. The point is that we want everyone – even you – to feel welcome! EQUIPPING For Growth – One of the most important aspects of the Student Ministries program is spiritual growth. Every group participates in weekly Bible Studies, book discussions, or small groups. We spend a lot of time looking at God’s Word and trying to figure out how it relates to our real every day lives in the 21st Century. We’ve spent time studying everything from sexuality to Biblical justice to “Answering the Hard Questions of Faith.” We’ve examined what God has to say about how we should live our lives and we’ve talked a lot about the life and actions of Jesus. No question or concern is off limits as we seek God’s truth! That’s what helps us learn and grow as his children.
